| The
XVII Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester from 25 July
- 4 August 2002. It
was the largest Commonwealth Games ever held and Team England
was victorious in gaining 54 golds, 51 silvers and 60 bronzes,
narrowing the gap in the medals table with Australia by a
very considerable margin.
The
team that was sent to Manchester was the biggest ever fielded
and along with 444 competitors, 211 officials were involved
in making the Games the success that they were for Team England.
Seventy
two nations competed in 14 individual sports and 3 team sports
and for the first time elite athletes with a disability participated
in Aquatics, Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
The success of this integration into the Games is one
that is to be repeated at the next Commonwealth Games in Melbourne
2006.
