The XVI Commonwealth Games were held in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 11 to 21 September 1998.
It was the
first time in its 65-year history that the Games were held
in Asia and the second to be hosted by a developing country.
All 70 countries in the Commonwealth participated
at the Games, making it the largest ever to be hosted.
Four new sports were introduced at the 1998 Games
and these were Cricket, Men's and Women's Hockey, Netball,
Rugby 7's. Also
included in the sports programme were:
Aquatics
Athletics
Badminton
Boxing
Cycling
Gymnastics
Lawn Bowls
Shooting
Squash
Tenpin Bowling
Weightlifting
England’s performance at the Games
was great and we came second in the medal table behind Australia
with 136 medals – 36 gold, 46 silver and 53 bronze.
Australia received 199 medals and Canada came third
with 99 medals.
