England performed consistently well in these first Youth Games and ‘topped’ the medal table with a total of 95 medals – 36 gold, 41 silver and 18 bronze beating Australia into second place with 86 medals. South Africa came third with 66 medals.

Competing sports in Edinburgh were: athletics, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis, squash, swimming and weightlifting. No team was sent for hockey.
